What AI can automate for manufacturing

These are the first four automations we usually build for manufacturing. Each one runs on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot or any other AI platform, connects to the tools you already use, and keeps a person on every decision that matters. A single workflow typically costs about $5,000 in the market, and our fixed quote comes in under it.

  • RFQ intake and quote drafting.Customer RFQs and drawings are read for part numbers, materials, quantities and due dates, then drafted into a quote using your costing rules. An estimator checks the numbers and sends the quote. Example: cuts quote turnaround from 3 days to 1.
  • Purchase order entry.Customer POs arriving by email or PDF are matched to quotes and entered as draft sales orders in your ERP. Order entry staff confirm mismatches before release. Example: saves about 6 hours a week for a shop handling 150 POs a month.
  • Supplier follow-up.Open purchase orders past their promise date trigger drafted status requests to suppliers, and replies update expected dates. Buyers approve the messages and any schedule changes. Example: saves a buyer about 4 hours a week.
  • Quality and nonconformance records.Inspection notes and photos become drafted nonconformance reports and corrective action records in your format. The quality manager reviews and closes each one. Example: cuts NCR write-ups from 30 minutes to 10.

What the IT has to get right for manufacturing

Automation only holds up on systems that are patched, backed up and locked to the right people. Managed IT help desk and monitoring start at $75 per user per month and run 24x7x365, with upkeep and security added a la carte.

  • Office networks separated from machines on the shop floor.
  • Tested backups of ERP, CAD and CAM data.
  • Controlled access to drawings and customer specifications.
  • Support for older machine PCs that cannot be replaced yet.

Which rules usually apply

Defense suppliers handling controlled unclassified information need NIST SP 800-171 and CMMC, export-controlled work may fall under ITAR or EAR, and customer quality requirements such as ISO 9001 often set rules for document control. This is general information, and your own advisers have the final word.

What it looks like in practice

For example, a 40-person machine shop receives about 25 RFQs a week, and the lead estimator spends an hour pulling details out of each one. With an RFQ automation, each request arrives as a drafted quote with materials, quantities and lead times filled in, and the estimator spends about 20 minutes checking it. That saves around 16 hours a week and gets quotes out days sooner.

Questions

Common questions

Can AI connect to our ERP?

In most cases, yes, through an API, a database connection or a scheduled import. We check your ERP version on the free first call and say what is possible.

We do defense work. Can we still use AI tools?

Yes, with care about where controlled data goes. We keep CUI out of tools that are not authorized for it and can scope NIST SP 800-171 and CMMC readiness alongside the automation.

Will automation touch our machines on the floor?

Not unless you ask for it. Most automations sit on the office side: quotes, orders, purchasing and quality records.
